Republicans in California's 34th Assembly District enjoy a
fifteen point partisan voter registration advantage (48%
Republican to 33% Democrat).
That’s one reason why this district, which encompasses Inyo
County, and takes in substantial portions of Kern, San Bernardino
and Tulare Counties, voted to re-elect President George W. Bush
in 2004 by a 66% to 33% margin.
Visalia is the largest city in this district, which also includes the cities of Tulare, Porterville, and Barstow among many others. Incumbent Assemblyman Bill Maze, who is retiring from this seat due to term limits, won re-election in 2006 with 68% of the vote.
